The Kilbryde Hike

The Kilbryde Hike was first held in 1969 and with only a couple of exceptions has been held every year since then.

The 2008 hike took place on 7th & 8th June in the hills around Crawfordjohn.

The winning teams in each class were from
Junior - 25th Stirling BB Company
Senior - EK Athletics Club
Expedition - EK Athletics Club

Why spell the name this way? The big yellow flag carried before the Kilbride Contingent at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge on 22 June 1679 bore the wording:- ‘Kilbryd - For God, King and Covenants’. After that the village became known as East Kilbride to distinguish from West Kilbride. The spelling ‘Kilbryde’ is a mixture of the old and the new.

The first Hike in 1969 attracted almost 30 teams. It started from the then new Lindsay House in Kittoch Street - the overnight Campsite was at Windshields Farm, north of Darvel - the finish was at the Old Parish Church New Hall. The Catering was by The Village Fish & Chip Shop!
